Multi-wavelength modeling of Cassiopeia A: Implications on cosmic ray acceleration
Abstract
We carried out a detail spectral study of non-thermal filaments near the forward shock of Cas A with data from the 1 Ms Chandra observation. A model that incorporates diffusion of electrons was constructed and applied to the data to account for observed spectral variation across the filaments. It also allowed us to estimate the level of turbulence, field geometry and particle distribution in the filaments. However, the radio images of Cas A clearly indicate that there must be another population of electrons that are distribute more uniformly over the remnant. We added this electron population to the model and applied it to state-of-the-art broadband SED of the source. The model describes the non-thermal radio and X-ray data well but needs a hadronic component to account for the gamma-ray (GeV-TeV) data. We discuss the implications of the results.
